There are now five classes of membership in the New Mexico Society of Anesthesiologists: Active, Resident, Retired, Affiliate, and Educational (AA).
Application for Membership Please apply for Active, Resident, Retired, Affiliate and Educational memberships by clicking on the appropriate member category below. A membership application for the ASA also needs to be completed, either online at the ASA website or by requesting a paper application. The application form shall contain an agreement by the applicant to support and abide by the Articles and Bylaws of the Society and shall otherwise be as prescribed by the Secretary/Treasurer. This form shall be updated and amended as necessary by the Secretary/Treasurer and the changes shall be subject to approval by the Board of Directors.
An application shall state the facts by which the applicant is eligible for such membership and shall be filed with the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society. An applicant shall be enrolled as a member upon completion of membership requirements and upon payment of the appropriate membership dues.
Active Member A physician, either an M.D. or a D.O., who is engaged in the practice of anesthesiology, shall be eligible for Active Membership if all of the following apply:
He/she is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists;
His/her location of principal professional activity is in the State of New Mexico;
He/she is licensed by the New Mexico State Medical Board or the Osteopathic Board to practice medicine in the State of New Mexico. The physician who is a member of the Armed Forces, Public Health Services of the US, or the VA, need not be licensed.
He/she will have successfully completed a training program in anesthesiology, accredited by ACGME or equivalent organizations, or the American Osteopathic Association.
A physician, in full time training in an internship or residency in anesthesiology in a program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or The American Osteopathic Association, who maintains membership in the American Society of Anesthesiologists shall be eligible to become a Resident member.
A physician who has been an active member in good standing of this Society for a period of at least ten (10) years and who has retired from the practice of anesthesiology, or who is disabled and unable to engage in the practice of anesthesiology for one year or more, shall be eligible to become a Retired member.
An educational member shall be an anesthesiologist assistant (AA), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), a student anesthesiologist assistant or a student registered nurse anesthetist.
Privileges of Membership
Active Members and Honorary Members: Active and Honorary shall be entitled to vote and to exercise all of the privileges of membership in the Society.
Resident, Retired, Affiliate Members and Educational Members: These members shall be entitled to attend meetings and participate in all of the functions of the Society including membership on committees. Except under unusual circumstances approved by the Board of Directors, they shall not serve as officers, delegates or other officials of the Society. Residents, Affiliate, and Educational Members shall not be entitled to vote at meetings of the Society excpet at meetings of committees on which they may serve. Retired Members may vote.
